Abstract

This article shows a historical overview of a scientific research project that I have designed, implemented and led with my group of young researchers on the dengue virus (DENV), which produces the most common viral disease in Colombia. Basically, it intends to show that the scientific activity has paid off and has raised reflections that go beyond the walls of laboratories providing evidence that make us somewhat optimistic. In a localized and situated manner, in our groupwe have learned that knowledge is socially constructed and that our laboratory is part of what is known as an epistemic culture. In the short time of its existence, the group has experienced tensions, hopes and expectations as well as the need to create itsown research niche. In short, the essential tools for addressing a social problem such as dengue can only be obtained from a multidisciplinary perspective. In this endeavor, the contribution of humanists is critical, but this has been really difficult to achieve in our current context. Therefore, this text is an invitation to our colleagues in the social sciences to include relevant issues in their agendas, in addition to the theoretical or metaphysical topics, that have been critical for our Western intellectual culture.
