Citizen participation in Local Agenda 21. A case study in Sagunto (Valencia)

This article is a case study conducted in the municipality of Sagunto with the intention of identifying how participatory Local Agenda 21 really is. For this purpose, a questionnaire was applied on a sample of 111 citizens from this town and the data collected were analyzed in order identify their knowledge and impressions on this instrument, its purpose and its participation mechanisms. The results show that the Local Agenda 21 is generally unknown to most of the population and that the efforts made to promote participatory democracy to achieve sustainable development are inadequate.
