Abstract

Mathematical modeling contributes to the development of mathematical knowledge and critical awareness, enabling individuals to critically examine social realities, question taken-for-granted assumptions, and engage responsibly in democratic and societal practices. Studies had approached this idea from a socio-critical perspective, investigating and promoting ways to discuss the role of mathematics in society. Based on a review of Latin America papers in mathematical modeling, this communication introduces some views on interdisciplinarity; in particular, it discusses the need to problematize reality, question epistemic hierarchies, promote democratic action, and accept uncertainty.
