Violent death and symbolism in the tombs of Aburrá Valley cemeteries

Abstract. This article approaches the funeral dynamics developed by the population settled in the peripheries of Medellín city. These territories have some particular social-cultural characteristics and have presented one of the highest violence indexes in Colombia. The mourning elaboration process is influenced by the problems of social order, which has generated the construction of non traditional attitudes and behaviors, as a result of the pain, fear, instability and confusion the people have, trying to give explanation and comprehension to the violent death.
