Desde la década de los ochenta no se sentía un impulso renovado por la publicación de textos generales y de difusión de la historia general del arte en Colombia. En el 2001 Santiago Londoño publicó Arte en Colombia: 3.500 años de historia; asimismo, Álvaro Medina ha emprendido desde 2013 la tarea de reeditar y ampliar sus Procesos del arte en Colombia; finalmente, en 2016 la revista Credencial Historia publicó El arte en Colombia. Estas son una serie de publicaciones que inmediatamente nos hacen preguntarnos qué sucede en la actualidad para que de nuevo nos encontremos con este tipo de discursos, en un contexto que de manera creciente le apunta a las historias locales/particulares, de artistas, períodos breves de tiempo y técnicas específicas.
