Abstract

Objectives: At the onset of twenty-first century, the concern for mental health in the world is growing. Some questions arise: is that a response to an increased frequency of mental disorders? What is happening to determine those trends? And how are they being faced? Method: a literature review in medline and some other journals in Sage Publications and Latin American critical perspective is conducted aimed at finding answers to these questions. Results: It was found evidence of increased frequency of mental disorders in the world and the complex challenges involved in their study. A decreased interest in the study of the social setting of the risks constellations are observed, and also the distance from the most genuinely preventive proposals in favor of an intense effort to provide pharmacological treatment to mentally ill population. Conclusions: an invitation is made for a new sight from a critical perspective that could allow us to build better future social scenarios not so dangerous for people’s mental health.
