El interés por la categoría de ciudadanía ha resurgido con fuerza durante los últimos años en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales y políticas. Tal y como lo expresa Garay, “en 1978 era posible afirmar confiadamente que el concepto de ciudadanía había pasado de moda entre los pensadores políticos. Quince años más tarde, 'ciudadanía' se ha convertido en una palabra que resuena a todo lo largo del espectro político”.
