SIQUIATRIA Y SOCIEDAD
Abstract
It seems necessary to ask ourselves why such a paper is given at a meeting of psychiatrists. From the answer we give to this question, important elements of interest may arise, since, surely, there will be apparent, superficial reasons, and others of great depth and importance, but whose background is not easy to make explicit. That is our purpose.
It is not often that, from one discipline, especially when it moves into the field of Medicine, one requests the assistance of another, unless this is done for the purpose of obtaining additional information, a certain erudition, which embellishes or complements what is already clear within one's own discipline.
I prefer to consider, however, that what is happening is, precisely, the recognition, more or less conscious, of a serious limitation that one has today, so that, from psychiatry exclusively, and especially among us, one can have an acceptable and consistent understanding of the phenomena that affect the psychism of an individual.
Accepting this limitation, it seems to me that new questions must be raised. The first would be: what is the cause, the reason for this limitation? The second would then be, once the cause has been clarified, to see if the contribution of sociology is the one to resolve this limitation.
But the mere formulation of the first question implies the acceptance of the limitation, a limitation which has been accepted by me, but which has not been demonstrated, and perhaps is not even suspected by the general public.
