Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a public health problem that is increasing, and women of childbearing age are one of the most affected groups. The prevalence in pregnancy is 9.8%.

Objective: To determine the frequency of adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes according to the degree of obesity in a group of postpartum women.

Methods: An observational and descriptive study was made. The sample included obese postpartum women hospitalized in the Clínica Universitaria Bolivariana between June and October 2018. Information was obtained from medical records and surveys. The SPSS v.24 program was used for the analysis of the results.

Results: The study included 106 patients, of which 20,8% had illness history prior to gestation and 43,4% of the patients developed diseases during pregnancy. In 90,6% of them gestational age was between 37 and 40 weeks. The mean weight in newborn infants was 3.141 g ± 463. Most of the women started gestation with overweight (94.3%) and 66% had an increased body mass index (BMI).

Conclusions: women with BMI in the obesity range at the end of pregnancy have a high frequency of gestational diseases like hypertension, hypothyroidism and diabetes.
