STSS thoroughly illustrates the correlation between basic and clinical sciences, since it connects modern immunopathogenic concepts with varied and severe symptoms and signs. This article reviews the following aspects of STSS: pathogenesis, epidemiology, microbiology, immunology, clinic and therapy; particular emphasis is done on the concept of superantigens, the immunological aspects of the syndrome, and the need for prompt diagnosis and therapy.
