The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between identification as smoker and risk perception among university students through in-depth interviews with adolescent smokers and nonsmokers. The results showed a relationship between consumption levels and the degree of identification with cigarette smoking. Lower consumption and identification rates were associated with lower risk perception and attempted cessation and lower perceived likelihood of adopting changes. Additionally, the valuations, attributions and expectations are crucial factors in the initiation and maintenance of smoking behavior and are related with consumption levels in the university population. It is therefore important to focus prevention efforts among adolescents with lower consumption rates and lower risk perception.
