Subjection and subjectivation: on the use of Foucault in education

In this article, the author questions the possible use of Foucault’s thought in the field of education. At first glance, the school appears for him as a place of exercising disciplinary power that does not seem to allow for any form of liberation. If the evolution of Foucault’s thought is shown as an effort to overcome this pessimism, it does not, however, lead to a return to thinking the subject as an unconditional principle, but rather as an ethics of self-care, expressed in practices of the self. Although it does not seem impossible to apply this ethics to the pedagogical practices, it is more difficult to make it a mere model of the educational act. Perhaps we must be content to consider Foucault’s thought as a call to vigilance and invention. And to struggle to remain attentive to the problem he points out, that of the difficulty of thinking (or being) a self, a subjectivity, that is not simply the effect of subjection techniques —and, a fortiori, of the difficulty of thinking the pedagogical act as one that trains such self.
