Vol. 38 No. 66 (2023): LATIN AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIES - THRESHOLDS AND ANTECEDENTS

View Vol. 38 No. 66 (2023): LATIN AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIES - THRESHOLDS AND ANTECEDENTS

In this dossier, we are interested in opening a space for the results of investigations that explore the antecedents of Latin American anthropologies. We hope that these contributions recognize and analyze local debates - in conjunction with the global landscape - in which processes of otherness construction, policies of cultural and heritage management, and the interaction of specialized actors with a wide diversity of other actors took root, all of which are key elements for their subsequent institutionalization. We believe that reflecting on the thresholds of Latin American anthropologies appeals to different fields within the discipline, including aspects such as the understanding and anthropological practice that took place in medicine and jurisprudence programs at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the processes of collecting that led to museums or institutions of anthropological nature (ethnography, archaeology, folklore, and bioanthropology), governmental/non-governmental policies for managing otherness through colonization projects or interventions that foresaw anthropological perspectives, reflection on anthropological issues from literary, political, and artistic practices that later influenced disciplinary normalization, the creation of societies, research centers, and institutes by non-governmental communities (local and foreign), many of which are marginalized in the official histories of Latin American anthropologies, etc.
