Abstract

Although the use of the adjective Medicina Popular has become relatively frequent, it seems that its meaning is not common to those who use it. It seems that the meaning, the content of the concept, is far from being clarified.

It is therefore convenient, when we intend to deal with the subject, to specify what we are going to understand, at least in this paper, by the famous Popular Medicine.

When we speak of folk medicine, we are referring to those practices carried out by primitive communities, in their attempt to recover a state of health or to cure a sick person. However, if we analyze more carefully what they do, how they do it and why they do it, we have to come to the conclusion that, in other sectors of society, the same or similar practices are also carried out and that, therefore, if we want to be rigorous, we cannot restrict ourselves to primitive communities in the treatment of the subject. The peasants, for example, have an extensive range of practices, which certainly obey non-systematized attempts to recover health.
