Abstract

This paper presents the four international trends of the New Public Management, originated in the most developed European countries, especially during the decade of 1980. These policies were introduced in the reforms of the State in developing countries, including Latin American ones, as strategies for achieving more
efficiency, effectiveness, equity, economy and better quality in the provision of public services. There is a description of how these new trends are introduced in the reforms that Latin American countries are carrying out within the Health System, especially in Colombian case. The management models are also described
according to different authors, who propose the way to implement those models in health organizations in order to achieve the goals of the health system.
