Abstract

Different aspects of active and passive euthanasia are discussed in this review; emphasis is made on the following: the need to avoid unnecessary lengthening of agony; the Integral management of patients; the right of patients to have their autonomy respected; the need for palliative care in the terminal phase of life. "Ethical moments" are detailed, namely: obtainment of information; identification and evaluation of the different options and of their possible consequences; selection of the fairest option and action according to the selected decision.
