Tuberculosis in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV): the fourth epidemic?

A review on tuberculosis in patients infected with HIV is presented; it includes its epidemiologic, clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and laboratory diagnosis aspects. Recommendations are given for the protection of health personnel involved in the medical care of HIV (+) patients coinfected with tuberculosis and with the processing of their specimens, in order to avoid dissemination of the latter infection.
