If quality of life is to be obtained for patients and their families health personnel ought to consider patients in an integral way, taking into account their past, present and expectations for the future; patients must be regarded as the main source of information concerning their situation; the different dimensions of a human being must always be taken into account, considering not only physical but also psychological, social, and spiritual functioning. quality of life is procured when patients are considered important until the very end of their lives, when unnecessary suffering is avoided, when autonomy concerning the proposed treatments is respected; when patients are taught to consider death as a natural part of the life process; when relationships with patients and their families are established and maintained on the basis of human, ethical, scientific and technical considerations.
