Abstract

Evolutionary psychology, proposed primarily by Cosmides and Tooby, states that the current human mind has innate, domain-specific algorithms that specialized in solving the adaptive problems faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors during the Pleistocene. The authors establish that natural selection produced psychological mechanisms in response to various pressures from the environment in which the Homo species evolved. In this discussion paper we propose three arguments aimed at defending the idea that the human mind has undergone changes after the Pleistocene. From the findings of cognitive archeology and the developments of the Soviet psychology, we propose that: 1) an explanation of the development of the mind is insufficient if it does not consider the active participation of human beings in the modification of their environment; 2) external coding systems (e.g., writing) should be considered. Since the Neolithic period, those coding systems go beyond individual and immediate experience and make accumulated historical-social knowledge possible; and 3) the fact that the species Homo sapiens has not changed genetically does not suppose that mental functioning is free of significant transformations during the post-Pleistocene period.
