Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine whether the relationships between pathological traits, dysfunctional personality beliefs, and personality disorders are as predicted both from the alternative model (American Psychiatric Association, 2013a, 2014) and from the cognitive theory of personality disorders (Beck et al., 1995, 2005). The sample consisted of 80 patients with personality disorders (37.5% men and 62.5% women; mean age: 30.7; SD = 10.5), evaluated with a sociodemographic and psychiatric history survey. Also were used the following tests: MINI, IPDE, PID-5, PBQ-SF, and CCE-TP. Three groups of hypotheses were tested: a) statistically significant relationships between pathological traits and personality disorders; b) statistically significant relationships of dysfunctional beliefs with personality disorders; and c) statistically significant relationships between pathological traits and dysfunctional beliefs. All three sets of hypotheses were very well met for antisocial, narcissistic, paranoid, and schizoid personality disorders. They were not met in histrionic personality disorder. As a result, this research represents empirical support for both pathological traits and dysfunctional beliefs models.
