Information For Authors

Scope and editorial policy

Perspectivas en Nutrición Humana is a scientific publication from the School of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellín, Colombia.  Its mission is the development and dissemination of academic and research advances in the various fields of nutrition, foods and feeding, and dietetics, aimed at an audience of students and professionals who make use of knowledge in this area.

The journal has been published each semester, without interruption, since 1999, making it a reference for research in human nutrition in Colombia as well as other countries in Latin America.

Types of articles

Instructions for authors are based on the requirements of the Permanent Indexing Services of Colombian Scientific and Technological Journals of Colciencias and of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (Vancouver style).

http://www.icmje.org/icmje-recommendations.pdf

The journal publishes the following types of articles, based on the classifications and requirements of the Departamento Administrativo de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (Colciencias) Publindex:

  1. Articles of technology and scientific research. Detailed documents presented with original results of research projects.
  2. Review articles. Refers to research documents where results have been analyzed, classified, and integrated into published (or unpublished) research, in order to give an account of developments and trends in the area of food and nutrition. Its objective is to analyze references on a specific subject matter and to provide a specific perspective. These articles are characterized by a careful literature review of at least 50 references.
  3. Reflection. Paper or document presenting a specific topic from the analytical, interpretative, or critical perspective of the author.  It contains statements and generalizations to fill knowledge gaps or provide solutions, but may well leave the door open to be challenged by another researcher.  Reflection papers follow the same organization of research articles in relation to the various sections, but without presenting results and discussion sections.
  4. Editorial. Document written by a member of the Editorial Committee or a researcher invited to help guide on thematic matters of the journal.
  5. Letters to the director. Critical, analytical dispositions, or interpretations of journal documents that constitute an important contribution to the subject discourse by the scientific community of references.

Preparation and format of articles

The manuscript is presented in Word Processor text, letter size paper, double spaced, 12 cpi (characters per inch), Arial font, with no space between paragraphs and pagination is consecutive.

The length of the literary work should not exceed the 25 pages.

All items must be accompanied by a cover sheet (Format 01) with the following information: Title in Spanish, should be concise but informative. Does not exceed 25 words, bold and centered. Uppercase is used only in the initial letter or proper names.

Authors. List the names of the authors in the order in which they will appear in the article, along with their institutional affiliations, city and country, and email. To facilitate standardization, it is recommended to visit the site Open Researcher and ContributorID (Orcid), which provides researchers with a persistent and unique digital identifier to distinguish them from all other researchers. https://orcid.org/signin

Authors from Universidad de Antioquia must adhere to the resolution that establishes an institutional signature with which to identify academic production.

  1. Tables and figures

Limit strictly to only what is necessary to illustrate the subject of the article. These are located at the end of the text in the order that individually titled tables or figures were mentioned. At the top of the page are the titles with Arabic numerals. Column headers are in bold and only the first letter is in uppercase. Use symbols in the following order: *, †, ‡, §, ||, ¶, **, ††, ‡‡. The tables have only horizontal lines between the title and the text box, between text boxes and the contents of the table, and between content and sources. Vertical lines are not used.

Figures can be graphics or pictures, the latter should be of good quality and in black and white, or in specific cases colors can be used. The journal reserves the right whether to publish color figures.

Units of measurement are to be abbreviated based on the International System of Units. http://www.sic.gov.co/drupal/sistema-internacional-de-unidades

When mentioned for the first time, abbreviations and acronyms must be written out in full, followed by the abbreviation or acronym. It is recommended to use them only when strictly necessary and preferably those that are commonly recognized.

  1. Citation and references

Citation of references in the text is done in consecutive form in Arabic numbers in parenthesis and not in subscript, in the order they are first mentioned, at the end of an idea or cited text. When there is more than one reference number, they must be separated by a comma without a space.  When there are various consecutive reference numbers, they are separated by a dash, as such: (10-12). For a direct citation the last name of the author is cited, followed by the corresponding reference number in parenthesis. If there are more than two authors for a direct citation the term et al. is employed, as such: according to Candelaria et al.  (18).

Quotes are when a word-for-word fragment of text from a document is inserted into the article. A literal quote should include in its reference the page number where it can be found. If a short literal fragment, up to two lines, is borrowed, quotation marks should be used in the text itself, for example: Simons et al. conclude that the anxiety mechanism is “imperfectly known and understood by many practicing doctors” (p4).  If a longer direct text fragment is used (more than two lines), the literal text is shown in a separate paragraph, indented and in italics.  This also applies to direct communications, responses, or interviews.  For example: as Rebecca Vasquez maintains (13):

The professional must be competent, with humane qualities and common sense, trained in communications, and able to help the patient confront their death.  We must promote the humanization of care in technical and relational aspects to better treat the patient as a human being, using individualized care given that each person is unique in personality and needs (p. 245).

The bibliographic references will be documented in their original language, based on the rules of the International Committee of Directors of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), known as standards of Vancouver, taken from the National Library of Medicine: https://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html

Whenever possible, the DOI or URL should be provided for references.

Classic examples of references of different types of documents are attached.

Submitting articles

Authors are able to register and submit items to the journal directly through the journal's web site: https://revistas.udea.edu.co/index.php/nutricion which uses Open Journal System (OJS). The author must submit the following documents:

Article without the authors' names.

cover sheet (Format 01).

Letter of responsibility of authorship (Format 02), signed by all authors and scanned, consisting of proof of prior knowledge of the article and mutual agreement of its content; and, that the manuscript has not been published previously or submitted for publication in another journal. Additionally, authors must acknowledge that there is no conflict of interest and that all the authors comply with the following requirements: important contributions to the idea and design of the study; data collection or data analysis and interpretation; drafting the article or critically reviewing its substantial intellectual content; and final approval of the version to be published.

Resume in curriculum vitae format (Format 03), completed by each of the authors.

To facilitate the submission of contributions, we recommended:

  • Register in the journal, if you already have a password, simply identify and initiate the entry of the article. As a user, in any of the journals, you are able to receive access to all articles each time a publication comes out, along with the opportunity to communicate with authors, editors, and other staff of the publications.
  • Before submitting an article, authors and articles must conform to the rules in this document.
  • For input of a manuscript follow the five steps in the OJS: 1. Beginning. 2. Enter the submission’s metadata. 3. Upload shipping. 4. Upload supplementary files. 5. Confirming the submission. To avoid problems, these steps can be taken consecutively in a single session (see detailed guide on the website, information for authors section).
  • The system prompts, separately, the metadata: the section to which it belongs, language, data from the authors, title, abstract and key words in English and Spanish.
  • Before you uploadthe article, remove authors’ information to ensure theanonymity of a double-blindpeer review, which is usedin the evaluation.Savea copy ofthe submitted documents, as the Journaldoes not assumeliability for damages or loss.
