Abstract

Background: More than half of the global population reports low serum levels of 25(OH)D. Vitamin D is associated with several biological functions, like regulation of serum phosphorus and calcium, and may have possible effects on pain. The objective of this review is to understand the validity and applicability of the results with respect to the efficacy of vitamin D as a protective factor for pain. Reflection: Limited dietary sources and low levels of vitamin D highlight the importance of its deficiency as a possible risk factor for pain. This makes it necessary to verify the consensus that confirms the association between optimal levels of vitamin D and the risk of pain. Conclusion: Some evidence exists on vitamin D deficiency and its relationship to different types of pain. Although the data remain inconclusive, vitamin D supplements have not always been associated with pain improvement.
