Abstract

The aim of this article is to show how self-translation works in Ilan Stavans’ rewritings. Stavans is an acclaimed author, translator and self-translator who follows Jorge Luis Borges’ ideas on translation. Ilan Stavans is a Jewish-Mexican-American polyglot who moves among Yiddish, Hebrew, English, Spanglish and Spanish. His translations show the contemporary interconnection between spaces and languages. Stavans is a palimpsest, since he is a hybrid and post-monolingual writer. He is a translated translator who argues, in line with Borges, that translation is not a secondary task but one that completes the original.

Author Biography

Ma. Carmen África Vidal Claramonte, University of Salamanca

Professor of Translation at the University of Salamanca and researcher in charge of the GIR “Translation, ideology, cultures”. He has published seventeen books, twelve collective volumes, and more than one hundred articles and book chapters on translation, contemporary art, gender studies, postcolonialism, poststructuralism, and literary criticism in national and international journals. She is a freelance translator in the fields of philosophy, essays, literature and contemporary art. He belongs to the editorial board of a large number of specialized journals in the discipline. She has been an invited speaker at Spanish and foreign universities (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Chile, Italy, England, France, Germany, Ireland). Member of translation and creation juries. He has several extraordinary and research awards.
