Abstract

Literature is plentiful in publications that seek to evaluate health promotion (HP) and disease prevention (DP), but just a few of them have specified what they are really evaluating. The lack of coherence in the criteria used by evaluators can contribute more to the inefficiency and discredit of both strategies than to their successful application. This paper is intended to facilitate the adoption of technical criteria for the evaluation of HP and DP. The document includes three sections: the first one analyses the notions of HP and
DP, establishing their essential features, differences and close relationships. The second one highlights some approaches that could be useful for the design of DE and PS evaluation systems. Finally, a table presents some aspects of HP and DP which are susceptible of being used as indicators for evaluation systems.
