From Cumbe to Run for It: translation and ethnic-racial issues

Cumbe (2014), by Marcelo D’Salete, is a graphic novel that portrays the resistance of blacks enslaved during the colonial period in Brazil, from their perspectives. In this article, we approach Cumbe’s translation into English: Run for It: Stories of Slaves Who Fought for Their Freedom (2017). Considering the relations between language, translation and ethnic-racial issues, our aim is to understand how the translation choices and the reception of the work construct meanings in their context of publication. For this purpose, we analyze the paratexts that compose the book (cover, back cover, footnotes, among others) and selected fragments of the work. As a theoretical and methodological reference, we use Descriptive Translation Studies (Lambert and Van Gorp, 1985; Toury, 1995; Bassnett and Lefevere, 1990; Tymoczko, 1999) in dialogue with Cultural Studies (Tymoczko, 2007) and Discourse Studies (Bakhtin, 2000; Rocha, 2014; Maingueneau, 2008). The main results point to certain translation strategies that propose meanings in order to make the experience of text reading didactic in its new context and to soften the racial oppression imposed on enslaved people in Brazil, portrayed in D’Salete’s work.
