Abstract

Acquiring competences during university education is key to prepare students for the current challenges of the job market and society’s demands. In the field of translator training, translation competence development stands out as a key aspect where academic preparation and professional practice significantly converge. Student professionalization depends on that of the trainer, whose practical knowledge of the job market and skill in integrating theory and practice are crucial for training. For that purpose, it is indispensable to have reliable instruments to evaluate the quality of teaching materials and their adequation to the profession’s demands. This study addresses the development and validation of the questionnaire “Evaluation of Translation Competence Materials”, which was designed to measure, from the student’s perspective, the degree in which different materials contribute to the development of that competence and foster their future professionalization. Therefore, we present the questionnaire’s validation process, where dimension reduction methods were applied that made it possible to explain 63.9% of variance, with a high reliability index (α = 0.88). This work aims to contribute to the debate about the adequation of teaching materials to professional reality. Results show that the questionnaire is a tool that permits gathering valuable information to improve translator training and adapt this training to the current needs of the job market and society in general.
