Abstract

For some decades now, the discipline has focused on the potential of translation as a form of activism and resistance, becoming a mechanism to destabilize the hegemonic discourses on History which have survived to the present day. Analyzing a case study through a self-reflection on a collaborative translation process, this paper aims to show to what extent this academic exercise can become a tool to counteract oblivion. Taking as an original a series of letters written by Paul Wendorf, an American soldier who traveled to Spain as a member of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the goal is to highlight the historiographical and documentary value of an unpublished text in its original context, which has been edited in Spain as an academic volume with the intention of contributing to the creation of a transnational memory. The intimate writing and the narration of traumatic events makes it necessary, in this case, to adopt a theoretical framework which incorporates the emotional and affective component which allows, at the same time, to critically approach an autobiographical and partial narration of the country at that time, which is described from a foreign perspective.

Irene Rodríguez Arcos, Universidad de Salamanca

Associate Professor in the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the University of Salamanca (Spain). Bachelor's degree in Translation and Interpreting, Master's degree in Translation and Intercultural Mediation, and PhD in Social Sciences (specializing in translation and intercultural mediation) from University of Salamanca. She teaches general and specialized translation courses at the undergraduate and master's level in the English-Spanish and French-Spanish language combinations. She is a member of the certified research group “Translation, Ideology, and Culture” (TRADIC) and collaborates as a translator with the group “The Internationals and the Spanish Civil War: Literature, Commitment, and Memory.” Her research focuses on journalistic and advertising translation studies, translation and gender, and translation and history.
