Abstract

Borges deals with translation and its implications in several areas of his literary work: criticism, translated texts, fiction and pseudo translation. But his reflections and ideas on the topic never become a systematic translation theory. This paper intends to follow through Borges's ideas and statements about literary translation, and the role of the translator, in order to extend them to the realm of commercial translation. The aim is to bridge the gap between those two areas that are usually divorced and then demonstrate that creativity and linguistic ability, as well as literary competence, are qualities that all translators must possess.
