Abstract

This article intends to present briefly Borges' main theoretical ideas on translation and how his constant practice of this activity, together with his vast knowledge on universal literature, considerably influenced the development of his own style as an author. We also aimed at showing, by means of some significant examples, the crucial role translation played in the reception of his works outside Argentina. Our article closes with a brief analysis of the first translation Borges wrote at the age of nine: Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince, where we can already find traces pointing at his tendency to reproduce not words, but the aesthetic value of the original.
