Abstract

Studies in Audio-visual Translation have significantly increased during the last two decades. Scholarly attention has been given especially to subtitling and dubbing. Nevertheless current social conditions have created new modalities and have reshaped already existing ones. Audio description, subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and non-professional subtitling, among other emergent modalities are becoming an important piece of the panorama of Audio-visual Translation. This article presents a brief description of the Audio-visual Translation modalities and the relevance technological development has had for them. Taking technological progress as a key point, the possibilities offered by communication and the accidental development of international audiences are analysed to understand the advance of audio-visual translation. The resulting constant changing framework allows Audio-visual Translation to reflect on its relation to Translation Studies, the practice of translation and the industry to understand the current relations among producers, translators, translated material and audiences.
