Doris Dana, traductrice de Gabriela Mistral : autocensure, ethos traductif, et amour romantique

Pour le lectorat en anglais, Doris Dana fut pionnière en tant que traductrice et éditrice du premier recueil de poésie de Gabriela Mistral, ainsi que de deux fables enfantines. En tant qu’exécutrice testamentaire, elle se chargea d’autoriser quelques traductions nouvelles. Malgré son énorme importance pour la diffusion de l’œuvre de la seule latino-américaine Prix Nobel de Littérature, incertitudes et contradictions continuent d’entourer son profil traducteur et son travail reste peu apprécié. À partir de la définition d’autocensure proposée par Francesca Billiani et du mécanisme de la censure intériorisée décrit par Pierre Bourdieu, on suggère dans cet article que Dana a étouffé son rôle et dévalorisé son travail de traduction du fait du stigmate d’immoralité qui pesa sur la relation lesbienne qu’elle vécut avec Mistral, relation dont les conséquences seraient certainement négatives. Afin de mener à bien une réflexion sur les effets de la sphère du privé dans l’autocensure traductrice, il est nécessaire de recueillir un minimum d’éléments qui permettent de définir la formation et les capacités qui nourrirent le travail de traductrice et d’éditrice de Dana. On mettra également en contraste sa version de “La otra” (« L’autre ») avec celles de Maria Giachetti, Ursula K. Le Guin et Randall Couch, et on commentera les traductions des fables de Mistral. De ce faut, l’appréciation permet de redonner toute sa valeur à la voix traductrice de Doris Dana, caractérisée par son attention détaillée et sa profonde connaissance de l‘œuvre mistralienne.
