Relationship Between Vitamin D Deficiency with Nutritional Status and Other Factors in Adults from the Inter-Andean Region of Ecuador

Background: Vitamin D Deficiency (VDD) is a public health problem associated with various diseases related to work activity. Objective: to relate VVD with nutritional status, body composition, and sociodemographic factors in workers from Quito-Ecuador. Methods: A cross-sectional study in 245 workers. VDD was evaluated by immunofluorescence, body mass index, body composition by bioimpedance, and sociodemographic factors. The associations between VDD and variables of interest were examined by logistic regression. Results: VDD was presented in 76% of the participants. VDD was significantly associated with cardiovascular risk by waist circumference, age, and gender. For each centimetre increase in abdominal circumference, the prevalence of VDD increased 4.4% (OR=1.044 CI95%:1.001-1.008; p=0.043). For each year of increase, the prevalence of VDD decreased 4.1% (OR=0.96; 95%CI:0.93-0.99; p=0.030). Women showed 2.33 times more VDD than men (OR=2.33 CI95%:1.28-6.94 p=0.011). Conclusion: VDD is high in workers in the city of Quito. Young female workers with a high waist circumference appear to be more likely to be VDD. Excess weight in workers likely influences outdoor physical activity, decreasing the amount of sunlight to which they are exposed, so they have low values of vitamin D.
