Role models and citizen education. The case of students from Institución Educativa Antonio Roldán Betancur at the municipality of Necoclí, Antioquia

The concepts of education for citizenship and citizen education have been used interchangeably, as well as other related terms, such as civic instruction. All of them are based on the need and the possibility of educating citizens in different institutional settings, with the clear goal of achieving model citizens who use the principles of the Political Constitution of Colombia in their relations with the state and with other citizens in different environments for interaction.
In fact, this research project started by analyzing the difference between the two processes: education for citizenship and citizen education. To this end, the model citizen promoted at Escuela Antonio Roldán Betancourt (IEDUCAR) in Necocli, Antioquia, is described and compared against the values of the role models of eighth grade.
To describe the institutional values, models, principles and guidelines of the Ministry of Nation-al Education (Act 115), we studied citizenship skills as well as some institutional documents such as the Institutional Education Project (IEP), the cohabitation handbook, and the syllabus for the area of social sciences. To understand the characteristics of the students’ role models, semi-structured interviews were used. At the end of this project, we proposed a debate on the findings and on possible options for citizenship education.
