On translation and terminology of social sciences and humanities: when culture encounters “culture”

When the matter of the translation of scientific and technical texts is brought up in the context of Translation, the debate seems to focus on the importance of a precise use of concepts and terms, and on the way in which computer tools make it possible for the translator to extract terminological units in scientific discourse and analyze the way they work. In the case of bilingual or multilingual terminology, these procedures would make it possible to achieve equivalence and “efficient” intercultural communication. Nevertheless, there are still some questions which we consider relevant and that remain left on the margins in discourses about scientific translation and terminology: is it possible to think of normative (or even descriptive) terminological processes as passive and free from contradictions, ignoring cultural factors, and questions related to linguistic, academic, and ideological hegemonies, which are prevalent in scientific communities? Is normalization able to deal with possibilities of equivocations? Thus, we propose an articulation with anthropology, in order to reflect on the processes of translation in the so-called social sciences and humanities, as well as the possible transformations that occur when translation takes place in these contexts.
