Abstract

Based on a review of the figure of James S. Holmes as a pioneer of contemporary translation studies, this introductory article identifies some critical aspects of reflection on queerness in translated cultural artifacts. To do so, the article is divided into three sections drawing from theoretician Alberto Mira’s concept of “unsubmissive look” (mirada insumisa) to recognize queer trajectories in translation studies from its disciplinary inception to the emergence of gender approaches to the research articles gathered in this special issue. The second section briefly reviews how “queer” is understood and has been translated in Spanish until the current coinage cuir. The third section proposes a conceptual organization of how gender has permeated translation studies by emerging relational categories such as “translation and gender,” “translation and queer,” and “translation and trans.” The article concludes with a brief presentation of the twelve articles collected in this issue.

Iván Villanueva-Jordán, Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, Perú

Researcher faculty at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas, where he teaches translation theory and research seminars at the Department of Professional Translation and Interpreting. Currently, he forms part of TRAMA research group (Universitat Jaume I), as a post-doctoral researcher, focusing on the representation and translation of sexual and gender diversity in audiovisual products.

Antonio J. Martínez Pleguezuelos, Universidad Complutense de Madrid

BA in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Granada, MA in Audiovisual Translation from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, MA in Translation and Intercultural Mediation and PhD in Translation and Interpreting, both from the University of Salamanca. He is currently a lecturer in the Degree in Translation and Interpreting at the Complutense University of Madrid and the Master's Degree in Audiovisual Translation and Localization UCM-UAM. He is also a member of the recognized research group "Translation, Identity and Culture" (USAL). Her research focuses on the study of the construction of minority sexual identities through translation, especially in the audiovisual and media fields. He has published articles and chapters in editorials and journals of national and international impact (Babel, Target, Hikma, Trans, MonTI, Meta, Spanish Journal of Applied Linguistics, etc.). He is also author of the book Traducción e identidad sexual: reescrituras audiovisuales desde la teoría queer (Granada: Comares, 2018) and co-editor of MariCorners: Estudios interdisciplinares LGTBIQ+ (Servicio de Bibliotecas UPM, 2020) and Hacia otra traducción e interpretación (Guillermo Escolar, 2023). He is on the Editorial Board of CLINA and the Advisory Board of Africanías and is a regular reviewer of specialized journals.
