Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze contemporary geography education, as well as the educational role of school geography. It considers the historical reality of the beginnings of the new millennium and the concerns for the limited educational impact to counteract the indiscriminate use of territory and the problems arising from spatial organization. Descriptive geographical education is currently implemented in classrooms, limited to the transmission of geographical concepts and notions. This situation led to a literature review and to proposals on Geographical Education and school geography, Geographical Education and educational change in school geography, and Geographical Education in renewing school geography. The article concludes that Geographical Education should facilitate school geography and the explanation of geography community situations, reducing the resistance to innovative change and facilitating geographic education in agreement with the needs of today’s society.

José Armando Santiago Rivera, University of the Andes

Full-time Ordinary Lecturer at the Universidad de Los Andes (1979). He is a graduate of the Pedagogical Institute of Caracas (Professor in Geography and History (1970), University of Los Andes, (Graduate in Education. Specialisation: Geography (1981). Master of Education. Specialisation: University Teaching (1985), Barquisimeto Pedagogical Institute and Master in Agricultural Education Rafael Urdaneta University (1989). PhD in Education Sciences from Santa María University (2003). Postdoc Program in Latin American Education (UPEL, 2013). He is a teacher attached to the Department of Pedagogy of the University of the Andes-Táchira (1979), Area of Teacher Training. Develops as a Line of Research the Teaching of Geography in Daily School Work. He is an Active Researcher at the University of Los Andes (1995). Member of the Geo-didactic Research Center of Venezuela (1973) and the Research Group on Theory and Didactics of Social Sciences (ULA) (1997).
