Translation, affect, and censorship in the Spanish-speaking world: Djuna Barnes' Nightwood and Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer

Abstract

This article analyzes different translations of novels with sexually explicit content such as Djuna Barnes’ Nightwood (1936) and Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer (1934) that were in circulation in Latin America and Spain. During the 1960s, Latin American publishers were first in translating and distributing these works, which afterward traveled to the Iberian Peninsula where, once there, had to pass the filter of the Francoist censorship prior to importation. In recent years, there has been a wealth of scholarship regarding censored translations under Francoism, however, there is a lack of works that tackle the circulation of cultural products published in Latin America from the censorship and “affect” point of view. A preliminary analysis by means of archival research shows that the translations done by Argentine translators during the 1960s already contained (self)-censorship. The aim of this article is, thus, to investigate the metamorphosis that the translations underwent due to explicit or implicit censorship in order to understand how the rewriting of said novels in Spanish affected Barnes’ and Miller’s reception on both sides of the Atlantic.

Author Biography

Sofía Monzón Rodríguez, Universidad de Alberta

Sofía Monzón Rodríguez is an assistant professor of translation and interpretation (tenure-track) at Utah State University. Her research covers the production and circulation of censored translations in Spain and the Southern Cone during the 20th century, as well as the reception of North American literature in those countries through the archive, affection and from the micro-history and memory of translation. Her research has been published in specialized journals such as Entreculturas, Translation Matters, Transletters, TransCultural and publishers such as John Benjamins and Comares. She combines her teaching and research activities in the United States, Spain and Canada with creative writing and literary translation.
