Abstract

War, violence and sexual and sexist abuse are just some of the scourges suffered by women around the world. In this context, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women is a major international forum for promoting gender equality policies. Here interpretation plays a key role. This article proposes a study of the construction of subjectivity and its related ethos through prosodic mechanisms in simultaneous interpretation (English-Spanish) from a transnational feminist translation studies perspective. Our hypothesis is that prosody in simultaneous interpreting is key to (re)configure senses that can foster (or hinder) transnational processes of production and dissemination of discourses on gender and social justice. From a methodological standpoint, this paper combines perceptual and instrumental analyses (Praat software) with a qualitative examination of cases taken from a corpus of speeches presented at the Commission. Preliminary results underline the active role of interpretation, its potential to contribute to the advancement of a gender agenda and social and ethical responsibility. The chapter seeks to contribute to the characterization and conceptualization of simultaneous interpreting practices in terms of the responsibility not only to the interpreting assignment but also to society at large, key aspects for current local, regional and international translation studies debates.
