Abstract

In this paper we present a brief analysis of the discursive and syntactic functions met by the vocative in Spanish. First, we will review the antecedents to the problem, from the Latin grammar, from which our vocative derives, to the contemporary discourse analysis and the Spanish syntax. From discourse analysis we take the contributions of Politeness theory, specifically the study of the functions of politeness formula in image production.    Finally, and taken into account these concepts, we analyse linguistic facts: a basic vocative corpus issued from various literary texts. Thus, we intend to examine the way in which the use of the vocative determines the creation of a very singular relationship between the author and his privileged interlocutor: the reader.
