The author reflects on the ambivalent meanings of some of the terms used in translation theory to define its object of study. Such an ambivalence means that while theory helps us with translation analysis and criticism, it does not provide a solid basis for teaching translation. By way of example, the author examines two experiences of translation in Latin America: the retranslate of the complete works of Shakespeare, and of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.
