Ensino do espanhol nos Estados Unidos: origem, presente e futuro

Resumo

O ensino e a aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras nos programas educativos nos Estados Unidos data do século XVII (Rexine, 1977). Entre os idiomas mais comuns ensinados em colégios e universidades encontravam-se o latim, o grego, o alemão e o francês, enquanto só até 1749 começou a ser ensinado formalmente o espanhol em uma instituição estadunidense. Desde então, as obras de acadêmicos importantes, como Mariano Cubí y Soler, sentaram as bases para o sucesso do idioma espanhol nos Estados Unidos. Na atualidade, o idioma espanhol aumenta nos Estados Unidos e é considerado o idioma mais ensinado. Aliás, espera-se que para o ano 2050 Estados Unidos tenha mais falantes do espanhol do que nenhum país do mundo. Esta revisão teórica oferece uma análise histórica do ensino da língua espanhola nos Estados Unidos, desde seus começos no século XVIII até hoje. Além disso, oferece informação sobre as tendências, metodologias e estratégias usadas para o ensino do espanhol ao longo dos anos e oferece perspectivas sobre suas possibilidades de pesquisa futura.
