Hegemonia do inglês no mundo: um olhar desde as concepções de um grupo de professores de inglês da Venezuela

Resumo

Este trabalho apresenta os achados de uma pesquisa relacionada com as concepções de um grupo de professores de inglês venezuelanos sobre a expansão e o uso do inglês como idioma internacional. Os participantes foram 78 professores de inglês de San Cristóbal, estado Táchira, Venezuela, que se desempenhavam, no momento da pesquisa, nos níveis de ensino médio geral e ensino universitário de várias instituições públicas e privadas. Como instrumentos para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se o questionário e a entrevista em profundidade. A análise dos dados realizou-se através do método de comparação constante, seguindo os passos da teoria fundamentada, com o apoio do software Atlas.ti versão 6.0 para a análise de dados qualitativos. Como resultado emergiram três categorias: visão colonial da expansão do inglês, visão acrítica e apolítica da expansão do inglês, e visão positiva e neutral do inglês e sua expansão. Em concordância com os achados, evidencia-se que os participantes percebem a expansão do inglês como positiva e benéfica, que lhes outorga maior prestígio e acesso ao capital. Tal concepção revela a desvinculação do idioma com as implicações socioculturais, políticas e ideológicas associadas à hegemonia do inglês no mundo.
