Entre os especialistas em ensino de língua estrangeira (LE), há uma profunda divisão metodológica em relação ao tipo de material a ser usado em sala de aula. Essa divisão pode ser basicamente representada pela dicotomia entre materiais do tipo graduado (ou seja, material simplificado, simplificado, projetado apenas com o propósito de introduzir algum elemento linguístico para o aprendizado dos alunos da língua estrangeira - tipo texto-guia) e materiais do tipo autêntico (ou seja, material não graduado, produzido por falantes dessa língua e para usuários dessa língua, sem qualquer modificação, e não destinado ao propósito de instrução de LE, por exemplo, filmes, revistas, jornais, revistas, jornais etc.) e materiais do tipo autêntico (ou seja, material não graduado, produzido por falantes dessa língua e para usuários dessa língua, sem qualquer modificação, e não destinado ao propósito de instrução de LE, por exemplo, filmes, revistas, jornais etc.): filmes, revistas, jornais, etc.).
